Thousands of individuals volunteer for this charity and they are all focused on assisting the less fortunate, with a focus on seniors, children, students and families that are facing a crisis.

Many free items are given by the non-profit, and the Assistance League also has thrift stores. The exact programs and resources available at each Assistance League center vary widely .

Each office is very focused on people from their immediate community and what is offered will depend on many factors, including funding, volunteers, and other factors. The focus of the nationwide group is on satisfying local needs first. All funds and donations provided stay in the local community. How the Assistance League helps:

School programs

There are a number of assistance programs offered. Some of what may be provided includes school clothing and supplies, help for seniors, assistance for victims of domestic violence, basic health or dental care, and much more.

Much of the aid is so called basic needs. Financial assistance is very limited and most of the charity centers near you do not offer this but rather support other basic needs. The primary resource offered, and this is available in most counties, is the: Operation School Bell program .

This supports students and children that need help. The charity and its local chapters may provide new school clothing, back packs, books, and other supplies to children in need as well as low income families. In many years hundreds of thousands of students receive support from the Assistance League and its Operation School Bell program.

Children are a main focus of the group. The services provided vary widely and will differ based on where a group operates from. The non-profit may provide them with new clothing, winter coats, shoes and school supplies, per above. One of the goals is to allow them to arrive in the classroom ready to learn.

Many of the programs also focus on their educational needs. Volunteers from the Assistance League will work with children to help them become successful readers, improve math skills, and in general become more productive.

Some centers may even have local scholarship programs. The Assistance League organizations will also address medical needs . The volunteers, often working with local community clinics and other charities, work to improve the medical and dental health of children in their communities. They will facilitate proper vision and hearing screening, dental care, immunizations, and other basic services.

Many resources are offered for adults as well. They work to strengthen communities, including providing affordable day care centers, helping to provide professional counseling, aiding trauma victims, help victims of violence, and offer guidance or referrals.

The Assistance League's varied resources provide older adults and the homebound with services such as free in-home meals, companionship, income opportunities, home care, and other aid.

Some examples of programs available are below. Once again, since each Chapter is different the specifics will vary by town, city and state. School programs: Adopt-a-School - Arranges birthday parties, celebrations and educational materials for elementary schools.

In some cases this will also support spelling bees for local school districts. College Scholarships - Provides scholarships for tuition and fees for students enrolled full time. Grants may also offer financial aid to high school seniors who are applying to institutions of higher learning, whether two or four year schools.

They can pay for college costs or trade schools. Expenses covered can be tuition, books and supplies for graduating high school seniors. Or they can refer students to other free college scholarship programs College Starter Kits - Provides the needy with much needed basic supplies, clothing, books, and more for college students.

It can help them transition to a dorm. Dictionaries for Elementary School - Free dictionaries are distributed to qualified low income and working poor students in a specific elementary school. These books will be the property of the students and a set is also provided for the classroom. Dream Dress - Formal dresses, handbags, shoes are provided by the Assistance League to foster girls in the local community.

This support is for those who wouldn't otherwise be able to attend prom/formal events without help. Family Learning Program - Mentoring, tutoring and other ongoing support to families. Tutors, staff, and volunteers can assist with math, reading, math, homework assignments and other enrichment activities.

The program helps both parents and children. It can also help immigrant children learn English. Glass Slipper - This can outfit high school students with gently-used dress clothes. The objective is to give them these items so that they can attend formal functions or other special school programs.

Hands on Literacy Program - The charity has provided one-on-one reading assistance for disabled children and those with special needs in elementary school classrooms. Volunteers read to, or with, children to improve their skills set and reading skills. Hygiene Kits - They may be offered as part of Operation School Bell below or other needs.

There can be hygiene items, female products, and other critical supplies. LEARN - Promotes literacy in the community and across the nation through gifts of dictionaries, books, birthday books, and educational programs.

Literacy - Students may be able to receive one-on-one language tutoring through reading sessions. This is generally an option for children who are well below grade level in reading as well as comprehension and speaking of English. Operation Early Reading - This offers so called reading readiness backpacks for community HeadStart and other school-based early education programs.

Operation Literacy - Teachers and staff from the Assistance League tutor children and adults in literacy. The program is also for students of all ages studying for their high school equivalency degree.

Operation School Bell - Maybe the non-profits signature program. It provides new clothing, hygiene kits and books to students, including elementary school children in need. In addition, it also offers free uniforms and/or other clothing items to some students. It can also offer books for school libraries and may provide other educational items to as funds allow.

In limited cases, some clients may apply for free back to school supplies by mail Operation Teen Parent - Younger and teenage parents are encouraged to complete their education. Students who meet requirements, including staying in school, receive quarterly rewards. A graduation is held to recognize graduates and maybe even award scholarships or grants.

Read, Enrich, Achieve, Discover, or R.E.A.D. - This is a localized reading program for school children designed to encourage the joy of reading and love of books. Scholarship Program/Teacher Grants

Senior assistance from the Assistance League

- Scholarships provide funding for community college students, high school seniors and foster youth students. In addition, the Assistance League may have teacher grants that help enhance the learning experience of their students.

Teacher Assistance Program - Some resources are for first year teachers. The charity will help them transition into their new profession by providing them with a gift card, supplies and more to purchase the extra materials they need for long term success in the classroom.

Domestic violence / abuse services

- Provides a monthly birthday celebration for senior citizens and the elderly at a center. The Assistance League often partners with Agency on Aging centers for this program. Adult Day Care Socials - Some locations arrange monthly parties at two adult day-care centers. Angels for Aging - Volunteers from the Assistance League provide visits, gifts and cards to residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes in their local communities.

They may also visit some local hospitals to visit the ill. Care About the Retired & Elderly - Provides companionship and assists with organizing special events for the retired and elderly.
