Residents of the northern Maine region have several different Salvation Army centers to turn to for assistance. Whenever possible, the locations may offer free food from a pantry as well as financial help for paying bills, rent, and housing.

There may also be free motel vouchers and substance abuse help.

The Salvation Army also has season services in Bangor and nothern Maine. This includes warm coats, heating oil, holiday assistance including free Christmas gifts from Adopt a Family, meals, school supplies for students and more.

Locations are available across the entire region, including in Penobscot County and Bangor. However families that live in Aroostook, Hancock or Washington County also have resources available to them.

Programs for Seniors and Elderly

The demand for any for of assistance is very high. The non-profit receives requests for help from the struggling, transients, senior citizens, fire victims, and those working poor that just needing little short term help to get through the day.

Many requests also come from people looking for employment and self-sufficiency services. Most of the assistance is provided from the local Salvation Army Social Service offices. Appointments will be needed. Food or meals is available from the Bangor Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen and other regional pantries and soup kitchens.

Mostly due to the weaker economy, the location will also respond to an increased number of requests for social and emergency services as people struggle to meet obligations like paying rent or their energy bills.

The Penobscot County pantry covers the areas of Brewer, city of Bangor, Exeter, Glendburn, Hermon, Kenduskeag, Levant, Orrington, and Veazi Maine.

When someone is about to run out of fuel oil during the cold winter months, or maybe they are behind on their rent and facing eviction, the Salvation Army may be able to assist. They have limited funds in Bangor Maine and other region. But they can also help with shelters and offering transitional housing programs and units.

The Salvation Army is always involved in spreading the joy of the holidays. They do this in Maine and also nationwide. The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays provide a sense of joy and tradition to the community, including those that are facing difficult times. Especially during these challenging times, acknowledging holiday customs, proving gifts and meals and more can provide a sense of relief and peace for families, individuals, and children.

Staff and volunteers meet with families and the elderly to help them with Christmas toys, food baskets, and holiday meals. Volunteers and donations are always needed too. Programs such as Angel Tree or Adopt a family in particular depend on the generosity of people and businesses in the Penobscot County region.

Children can receive a toy or winter coat with your generosity. Or donate to the Red Kettle Campaign. This helps the non-profit provide holiday assistance and also financial aid year round.

The Salvation Army operates some of Maine’s favorite thrift shops and they may have clothing, furniture, holiday toys, furniture and much more on site.
