Community Action Agency Services

there are many community action agencies, government offices, public housing agencies (PHAs), and local county governments near you that run the Massachusetts Sec 8 housing program.

Applications for section 8 are also available online in MA. There may also be emergency vouchers for the elderly, veterans or disabled as well as veterans. The Public Housing Agencies across Massachusetts run the section 8 program for the state.

They accept applications, work with clients to provide them with vouchers, and may be able to help families locate safe and affordable homes or apartments to live in. They also help tenants port their vouchers to cities in the state and parts of the country.

A listing of the PHAs can be found below. Note that there is often a waiting list for the vouchers, and it may take months or longer to be enrolled. Most the families who are enrolled will only need to pay at most 30% of their income towards their monthly rent. There can be some deductions made to determining that income level if there are disabled or elderly individuals in the household.

If the rent owed is greater than 30% of your income, then contact your local Public Housing Agency to get details on your next steps. With the rent and income limits in place, section 8 can be a very effective program to ensure people have a home to live in.
